C. James Richardson

Professor C. James (Jim) Richardson passed away on October 12, 2003 in hospital in Halifax. He was born in Calgary and received degrees from the universities of Alberta, Toronto and London. He has been a member of the Department of Sociology since 1975, serving as Chair from 1996 to 2002. His research involved class structures, the criminal justice system, family life, domestic violence and mediation. His publications include several books and monographs, including the widely adopted extbook, "Sociology for Canadians." He was a dedicated teacher whose classes at all levels attracted large enrolments.

Jim was an active academic citizen at UNB, as well as regionally and nationally, and served as President of the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association. In recognition of his distinguished career of scholarly work, the CSAA awarded Jim its Outstanding Contribution Award in 2000. He is survived by his spouse, Dr. Jennie Hornosty and four children, Michael and Rebecca Richardson; Jason and Justin Hornosty.

Visitation will take place 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19, at McAdam's Funeral Home, 160 York St. in Fredericton. A Memorial Service is planned and will be announced once arrangements are known.

University flags will fly at half-mast for the remainder of this week in honour of Dr. Richardson.
