dam-l micro hydro vs large hydro
recently one of my collegues here who's background is in
biochemistry and is now doing research into aquatic plant ecology was
wondering about what the impacts of smaller dams were in comparison
with bigger dams.
I haven't run into much in the way of impacts of micro-hydro and smaller dams.
I wasn't sure what to say to her besides the impacts that would be created
on a cumulative level by numbers of micro-hydro.
I've also heard that cascade dams create problems for the biota of a river.
My [perhaps false] understanding of small hydro is it relies more on
run of the river projects involving the the sinking of turbines
rather than reservoir construction.
I recollect though that some Asian run-of-the-river projects - I think
perhaps the Mun? - did have severe fisheries impacts, according to some
reports in the small south-east asian journal Watershed.
What gives?
