MOZAMBIQUE: 63 Mozambican peasant families are to receive compensation for
land that has been allocated for the construction of an electricity
sub-station in Beloluane. The total amount earmarked for the compensation
is about US$700. The sub-station is being built by Motraco, a consortium
formed by the electricity companies of Mozambique, South Africa, and
Swaziland to supply the power needed during the construction of the MOZAL
aluminium smelter at Beloluane. According to Motraco, this is just the
first stage, since more peasants will be asked to abandon the area in July
when it starts building the huge infrastructures needed to ensure the power
supply for operating the smelter. The consortium also intends to build 2
transmission lines that will carry electricity from South Africa, through
Swaziland, to Beloluane. All the areas where the infrastructure will be
built are presently occupied (Panafrican News Agency, May 26, 1998).
