I am a grad student in Natural Resource Management in New Hampshire. I
am planning to do a Masters project on a proposed dam removal in my
local area. I am all for it and our Department of Environmental
Resources is pro-removal too. NH doesn't have a lot of experience with
dam removal and I would like to see this project go very smoothly as it
could serve as a model for further dam removals. I am looking for
information on minimizing the impacts of dam removal. In particular, I
am interested in sediment management - whether they be toxic or not
(our sediments are being tested now). This is a fairly small dam (about
10') and when drawn down, I think the exposed impoundment area will be
small too. I wonder about the necessity of seeding/planting/erosion
control on this area. (I am in the process of trying to measure how much
sediment we have).
I thought the DAM-L electronic discussion list might be a good source
of information on these topics. I have a bit of information together regarding
dam impacts, but very little on impacts of dam removal. I have info from the
state of Wisconsin (they've done quite a few small dam removals) but nothing
on sediment management. If anyone have any good ideas........
Thanks,
Robert Wood
