PORT-LOUIS, Mauritius (PANA) - The government of Mauritius plans to set up
a plant in the north of the island country to process liquid waste
for use in irrigation.

The executive director of the irrigation authority, Nitiraj Toolsee, said
liquid wastes will be collected from hotels and restaurants and treated for
irrigation in in Grand-Baie, the country's most fertile area, which has a
dearth of rainfall.

''The government decided to stop pouring liquid wastes into the sea, but to
treat it and use it irrigate sugar cane plantations and food crops,'' he
said.

Toolsee told PANA that the project would begin very shortly and that the
plan was to irrigate about hundred hectares of plantations by 2002.

He added that the authority plans to treat about 600,000 cubic meters of
liquid waste annually for irrigation to reduce marine pollution.

''We also envisage to build two other treatment plants in Baie-Du-Tombeau,
near the capital, and in Saint-Martin, in the west of the island,
another rainfall deficient area,'' Toolsee said.

The project is being funded by the European Investment Bank and the French
Development Agency.

Liquid waste is treated and used for irrigation on a large scale
particularly Israel and France.

Botswana has a pilot project for water recycling at school levels, aimed at
raising the awareness of students and neighbouring communities about
the importance of water conservation.
