Wasting Water Can Lead To Jail
July 12, 1999
PORT-LOUIS, Mauritius (PANA) - The government of Mauritius has announced
new measures to combat wastage of water.
Public utilities minister Rashid Beebeejaun said those found violating the
measures could end up in jail.
''We cannot allow people to waste water in this period of severe drought
affecting the island since the end of last year,'' the minister told
PANA.
The new regulations came into force last week.
The regulations stipulate that no person shall, without a reasonable
excuse, use through a hosepipe, sprinkler or by any other means any
domestic or non-domestic supply to wash any vehicle, pavement, building,
water any hedge or lawn or for any other wasteful purpose.
''Anybody who contravenes this regulation shall commit an offence and on
conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding R2,000 (80 US
dollars) and to imprisonement for a term not exceeding two years,''
Beebeejaun said.
He also indicated that a severe penalty will apply to those who discharge
polluted water underground or in any canal, river, stream, lake,
reservoir or lagoon.
