NIGERIA EXPLORES WATER PRIVATISATION

Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital is reported to have asked the World
Bank's Private Finance arm, the International Finance Corporation, to
coordinate the privatisation of the state's water corporation and sanitation
services.

An article in the Financial Times suggests that about USD1.5bn worth of
investment will be required to update the current system that is estimated
to be supplying piped water to only one in five of the 14 million
inhabitants of the city.

Open bidding for the privatisation is expected in 2001.
