1.1 WATER CONSERVATION AND DEMAND MANAGEMENT STRATEGY
Due Date: not stated

The Directorate of Water Conservation, within the Department of Water
Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) is in the process of developing a National
Water Conservation and Demand Management Strategy. As a first step the
Draft Water Conservation and Demand Management National Strategy Framework
has been produced and is being circulated for critique and comment. This
document lays out the key principles, and the legislative, economic and
social frameworks that would guide a national water conservation and demand
management strategy. As a part of the overall demand management strategy,
the Directorate is preparing four sectoral strategies for:

1. Agriculture and Forestry
2. Local Authorities
3. Industry, Mining and Power
4. Environment

The Directorate is hoping to release the sectoral strategies for public
comment within the next month or two.

The Draft Water Conservation and Demand Management National Strategy
Framework is available from the Contact Electronic Library, see section 3
for more details. For more information, contact Mr Dhesign Naidoo, the
Director of Water Conservation, at (012) 336 8819.
