dam-l Enquiries from the Niger Delta/LS
This NGO is looking for help--technical expertise, links to groups who can
help, etc.
Greetings from the Niger Delta!
ENQUIRIES
Watch the Niger Delta (WAND) is an NGO based in the
Niger Delta, Nigeria. Its main goal is to promote the
principles of participatory and sustainable use of
natural resources within the Niger Delta Ecoregion..
Current WAND activities include environmental
monitoring and campaign, and facilitation of
community-based forest resource management.
Recently, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced
its intention to dredge a 577km long segment of RIVER
NIGER. The dredging is proposed to start from Warri a
location town along the lower reaches of the river and
terminates at Baro in the Northern part of the
country. Furthermore, a sum of N8 billion
(US$80,000,000=) has been set aside by the government
for this purpose. The fund will be administered by the
National waterways Authority (NWA).
WAND believes the proposed dredging activities will
unleash a plethora of environmental Impacts, including
destruction of flora and fauna, deterioration of
water quality , Salt water (saline) intrusion,
conflict with artisanal fishing activities, etc.
These impacts , no doubt, will further compound the
existing critical ecological situation along the lower
reaches of the Niger (Niger Delta), as you may know,
Oil and Gas production in the fragile Niger Delta is
the most careless in the world, with the highest
record of oil spills and gas flaring.
Sequel to the above, WAND has decided to lunch a
campaign programme against this proposed dredging
activity. The programme is articulated to include
mobilization for community non - violent direct
actions, media campaigns and holding of at least a
conference of stakeholders and experts.
We shall therefore be glad if the International Rivers
Network will be interested in our planned campaign
programme by offering support which may include:
1. Grants (if the Network is a grant-making
organization )
2. Direct involvement in the campaign programme
3. Linking us to other organizations that will be
interested in the programme
4. Information search (Literatures; further/
alternative campaign strategies; similar campaign
experiences elsewhere, etc); etc
On response to this enquiry, we shall provide further
information as may be necessary.
Thank you in anticipation of a quick and favourable
response.
Yours sincerely,
Godwin Frank
