*******************************************
Water for Life, Not for Death!
March 14 International Day of Action against Dams and for Rivers, Water and Life
*******************************************

Dear Friends,

The Day of Action is three weeks away, and the list of groups participating
is growing each day. More than 37 actions are planned in 20 countries to
protest against dams and speak out for free-flowing rivers and the
communities that depend on them. We urge you to join us on March 14 for the
Day of Action.

Below are descriptions of some actions planned for the Day of Action. Look
below to see what is happening in your region and around the world. If you
are thinking about doing an action but have not yet decided what to do, you
may find ideas or inspiration in these actions. If you are planning an
action and have not yet contacted me, please do so. (And, if you have
contacted me but your action is not listed, be sure to send me a one
paragraph description of your event.)

Please provide me with the following information:

* One or two paragraph description of your event
* Name of organizing group
* Contact person
* Address
* City, Postal code, Country
* Phone
* Fax
* E-mail
* Website
Note: Make sure to tell me if your action should NOT BE MENTIONED on
our website or to the media (there are cases where the action needs to be
kept quiet until the day it takes place).

We encourage you to also document your action, whether by photographs,
video, written account, or all of the above. We will be preparing a packet
documenting events organized for the 2000 Day of Action. Also, please keep
local press that you receive regarding your action and send it to us along
with a few photos. Please send to IRN (Attn: Susanne Wong).

We are very excited about this year's Day of Action and look forward to
standing together in solidarity against dams on March 14! For more
information, visit our web page at www.irn.org/dayofaction.

*JAPAN
Association of Fishermen to Preserve the Kumagawa and the Kawabegawa
Action: We will plant trees in the mountain along the Kuma River (of which
the Kawabe is a tributary) to raise a "Green Dam" instead of a "Concrete
Dam" on March 5th. The "Green Dam" consisting of trees will help to ensure
a plentiful flow of water and prevent flooding .We chose a "Green Dam" of
trees instead of a "Concrete Dam" because the "Concrete Dam" will cause
sediment and gravel to collect and the dam will eventually have to be
abandoned in the future. A "Green Dam" of will maintain a plentiful flow of
water and prevent flooding. Let's place our rivers and mountains under the
care of fishermen and citizens who know how precious mother nature is.
Let's plant trees!
