dam-l LS: ADB forum at Foreign Correspondents Club Thailand
AT THE FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS CLUB OF THAILAND:
Global Villain or Propaganda Victim: The Asian Development Bank
Thursday April 27, 2000 (7pm) Dinner Bt280 members; Bt400 non-members;
Bt250 non-members entry only. Panel discussion 8pm
Violent protests recently marred meetings of the WTO, IMF and World Bank in
Seattle and in Washington. The turmoil may come to Thailand soon, with
their sister institution - the Asian Development Bank - holding its annual
meeting in early May in Chiang Mai.
Is the Asian Development Bank a global development villain supporting
nefarious multinationals in their efforts to rule the world or is the ADB a
victim of an irresponsible and inaccurate NGO propaganda campaign? Find out
in what will likely prove a lively exchange between representatives of the
bank and NGOs.
The distribution of printed materials is welcome at the club, but
disruptive protests and pie throwing will not be permitted.
Distinguished panelists include Warren Evans, Manila-based manager of the
ADB's Environment Division, Khun Witoon Permpongsajaroen, Secretary General
of the Foundation for Ecologial Recovery which has been tracking the impact
of ADB projects upon natural resources in Thailand and the Greater Mekhong
Region, Shalmali Guttal, coordinator for Micra-Macro Issues Linking
Programme for Focus on the Global South linking development, trade and
economic policies examining their impact and how they can be changed and a
representative from the Thai government Fiscal Policy Office of the
Ministry of Finance.
