Zambia to Build Two New Power Stations
( June 01, 2000 )
LUSAKA (June 1) XINHUA - The Zambian government has announced its plans to
construct two hydro-electricity power plants in the country, the Zambia Daily
Mail newspaper reported on Thursday.
The development of the new power plants is expected to beef up the
nations's power supply and to exploit the void in the South African market
which is anticipating a critical power shortage by 2008.
According to permanent secretary Peter Mwamfuli of the Ministry of Energy
and Water Development, the blue print to construct the power plants would be
ready as soon as the funds to finance the projects are accessed.
The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa said last month that it
had information to the effect that South Africa would be hit by a power
shortage to be caused by increasing domestic, commercial and industrial usage
of the commodity.
The regional grouping advised Zambia, which it said has great potential
to provide power to the entire region, to exploit the situation and provide
South Africa with electricity.
