Housing and homelessness advocates, and allies:
If you will be in Ottawa on Thursday, March 23, please plan to attend a
special media event at 2 p.m. at the Human Rights Memorial on Elgin Street.
The overall theme is: Dying for a home - the housing crisis and
homelessness disaster in Quebec, Ontario and the rest of Canada.
The event is being co-sponsored by the Front d'action populaire en
reamenagement urbain (representing 60 groups throughout Quebec), the
Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, the Ottawa Alliance to End Homelessness
and the National Housing and Homelessness Network.
One year ago on March 15, 1999, the United Nations' Human Rights Committee
in New York City held a hearing on Canada's compliance with Article 6(1) of
the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights, which reads:
"Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be
protected by law. No one shall be artibtrarily deprived of his life." The
U.N. Human Rights Committee condemend Canada's failure to take action in
the nation-wide housing crisis.
