In many parts of Nepal, people are living in an environment of fear,
insecurity and uncertainty. In the course of a civil war between a Maoist
movement and government forces, hundreds of citizens in this Himalayan state
have been killed, thousands have fled their homes, and public and private
property worth millions of dollars has been looted or destroyed. Development
activities have stopped or slowed down, and the socio-economic conditions of
the people have worsened
In 1991, Nepal moved to a multi-party, democratic system of government.
Hopes were high for the new system but, after five years of the frustration
with political instability, the prevalence of corruption, a deteriorating
economic situation, and poor governance, a Maoist movement arose to
challenge the government. Once known as a peaceful country, Nepal has now
become a country where terrorism and violence are common. Unless steps are
taken quickly to find a peaceful solution, the situation will only get
worse.
To inform Canadians about the crisis in Nepal, Transgenus International, an
Alberta-based NGO, in collaboration with South Asia Partnership (SAP)
Canada, is holding these forums.
The goals of the forums are:
To inform the public about the situation in Nepal.
To identify how individuals, civil society, and the Government of Canada
can help to bring about peace in Nepal.
To build up a cross-Canada network of people and organizations those have
interest in peace, development and good governance in Nepal.
