Two paths cross on a descent into Guatemala's past: that of Mateo Pablo,
a Maya survivor of one of many massacres committed by local government
troops, and Daniel Hernández-Salazar, a concerned Guatemalan artist and
photographer. Together they travel to a remote site in the highlands
where the community of Petanac once stood. The bones found there by
archaeologists tell a mute story of agony.
"The Haunted Land" was filmed in Guatemala during the exhumations of the
victims of the Petanac massacre, an atrocity committed by the Guatemalan
army on July 14, 1982. More than 200,000 people were killed or
disappeared in Guatemala from 1960 to 1996. The vast majority of the
victims were Mayas, and of the 669 massacres documented during this
period, 626 have been blamed on the Guatemalan government, which was
supported by the American government. Those responsible for these crimes
against humanity have never been brought to justice and some are still
in power. General Rios Montt, who was head of state during the massacre
of Petanac, is today President of the Guatemalan Congress.
