FIRST NATIONS LEADERS WILL MARCH TO PARLIAMENT HILL NEXT WEEK

OTTAWA, ONT. - First Nations leaders from across Canada will march to 
Parliament Hill next Thursday May 23, 2002, to advance their 
'rights-based' agenda in opposition to the Government of Canada's 
assimilation agenda.

The "March for Sovereignty" will be held on the final day of the 
Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly, May 22 and 23, 
2002, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ottawa.

The march will demonstrate to Members of Parliament that First 
Nations are opposed to the government's proposed First Nations 
Governance Act and its flawed and failed consultation process. The 
FNGA is expected to be introduced into the House of Commons next 
month by Indian and Northern Affairs Minister Robert Nault.

A news conference is scheduled to take place at 3:30 PM on Parliament 
Hill to announce a National First Nations Statement.
