[OPIRG-EVENTS] NOWAR/PAIX meeting on Mon July 22th
The Network to Oppose War and Racism/ Pacte contre
l’agression, l’intolérance et la xénophobie,
(NOWAR/PAIX), has it's next meeting on Monday July
22nd, at 7:00pm-9:00pm, in room 123 or room 125 Simard
Hall at the University of Ottawa on Waller St. just
south of Laurier. Rooms depend on availability, when
we are locked out of either of those rooms we head
down to the cafe in the sub-basement of that building
and post a sign to this effect.
This will probabily be a busy meeting. In addition to
our ongoing intiatives, we will be joined by people
with a proposal for and event 3 day event in
commemoration of the Sabra & Shatila massacre that
took place in 1982 for September, perhaps someone to
discuss the last article posted about the Canadian
investment in US 'defence' spending (via Carlyle
Group, article by Steven Staples), and someone to
explain the concept for a conflict resolution workshop
planned for October.
As always, new individuals and groups are welcome at
our meetings.

WHO IS NOWAR/PAIX?
In response to the horrific events of September 11,
the resulting declarations of war by the U.S.
government and its military allies, the attack on
civil liberties and the right to dissent, and the ugly
racist and xenophobic attacks on innocent people of
colour across North America, a group of concerned
Ottawa-area citizens has recently formed the Network
to Oppose War and Racism/ Pacte contre l’agression,
l’intolérance et la xénophobie, (NOWAR/PAIX).
This network has three goals:
1) to oppose terrorism in all its forms, the U.S. call
to war, and Canada's participation therein;
2) to oppose racism and the racist backlash against
people of colour, including attacks on immigrant and
refugee rights;
3) to oppose the erosion of civil liberties in the
name of national security.
Our network, which is made up of a diversity of
members from within the community, seeks to build a
broad-based coalition of organizations and individuals
within the Ottawa region to advance the above goals by
organizing events and increasing public awareness in
the coming weeks and months.
