[OPIRG-EVENTS] Presentation: Situation of the Female Garments Workers in Bangladesh
A penetration on
Situation of the Female Garments Workers in Bangladesh
By Peggy Teagle
Date: Tuesday July 30th, 2002
Time: 1:00-3:00
Place: Room 870
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
200 Promenade du Portage, Hull
It promises to be a most interesting afternoon. The CIDA Bangladesh Program,
Asia Branch is organizing a session on the current situation for female
garment workers in Bangladesh. The recent downturn in the ready made
garments industry in Bangladesh is impacting the lives of the 1.6 million
female workers engaged in the sector. The garment industry has been
negatively effected by a number of factors. Official figures indicates that
about 1200 factories have closed, leaving about 400,000 workers unemployed,
the majority being women. These women constitute the first large-scale mass
employment of female workers in the formal workforce in Bangladesh.
Peggy Teagle, the Field Manager and Organizational Development Advisor of
the bilateral project Urban Services and Advocacy for Gender Equality
(USAGE) in Bangladesh, will provide first hand information on the current
situation and effects of the downturn in the garment industry on women.
Peggy will also highlight the exciting advocacy actions being supported by
USAGE, which focuses on piloting ways to address the housing, health and
advocacy training needs of female garments workers in Bangladesh, and its
partner Nari Uddug Kendra (NUK) with the garment workers, the Bangladesh
Garment Manufactures and Export Association and the Government of
Bangladesh. Recommendations will also be explored.
Peggy Teagle has a broad base of experience working with NGOs, government
and the UN in Canada and overseas. Her immediate past position was as:
Executive Director of the Canadian Consortium for International Social
Development, a research institute at Carleton University. She has worked
extensively on peace and development projects and with coalitions. She was
the founder of the Canadian Peacebuilding Coordinating Committee and
Coordinator for the civil society process for the World Summit for Social
Development. Peggy worked as a journalist for Kompas in Jakarta, Indonesia,
as a project manager for the American Soybean Association in China,
organizing technical visits and developing a school lunch program for over
500 schools in Beijing. She was the a project officer for a distance
education project with Simon Fraser University and the University of Juba in
Sudan, negotiating with communities to establish field based research and
implementation projects for faculty and students at the University.
