[OPIRG-EVENTS] Peace by Piece:Public Forum and Conflict Transformation Training




Peace by Piece, a local Ottawa initiative of concerned
citizens for conflict transformation, has organized a
weekend of presentations, discussions and a workshop
on issues that affect our local and global
communities. The event is divided in two parts: a
Public Forum (free and open to all) and a more
intensive two-day Workshop limited to forty (40)
participants (registration is required and a
registration fee is applicable). 

Public Forum:

Empowering People and Communities for Peacebuilding
and Social Justice:Challenging the Spread of and
Corporate Globalization

where:  Ottawa Public Library, Main Branch

when:   Friday October 18, 2002
7:00 p.m -10:00p.m.

Both events will feature Kai Frithjof Brand-Jacobsen
as guest speaker and workshop facilitator. Mr.
Jacobsen is founder and director of PATRIR, the Peace
Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania and
co-director of Transcend, a network of more than 200
of the world's leading practitioners and scholars in
peacebuilding and development from over 60 countries
around the world. 


Workshop: Tools for Empowerment & Transformation: 
Rethinking How We Look At Conflict

where:  Sandy Hill Community Health Centre,
221 Nelson St. at Rideau St.

when:    Saturday and Sunday,
October 19 and 20, 2002

cost:  $50.00 waged  $25.00 students and non-waged
with a limited number of subsidies are available;
please advise contact person if a subsidy is required

Please registration as soon as possible as there is
limited spaces, a vegan/vegetarian lunch will be
provided on both days

Workshop participants will explore methods for
transforming direct, structural and cultural violence
through peaceful means. Based upon experiences in more
than 40 countries, the training program will develop
skills, tools and knowledge for conflict
transformation, outlining concrete challenges and
opportunities for working to overcome violence and
injustice, while empowering people and communities for
active peace work and social struggle. Each
participant will receive the Transcend training
manual-adopted by the United Nations as its official
training manual-as a workshop training aid and
reference manual.
