[OPIRG-EVENTS] TODAY Cross-Canada Call your local MP Day of Action
(PLEASE ACT ON THIS TODAY - SEE MESSAGE FROM CANESI and QNESI BELOW)
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12th
cross-Canada "CALL YOUR LOCAL MP" Day of Action
Call your MP today! Call the person who is supposed to represent your voice
in decisions that the government makes in our name. You could, for example:
-express your clear opposition to any Canadian involvement in the war on
Iraq;
-ask your MP what her/his position is and then either 1. express support for
the position of those who expressed clear views opposing the war,
encouraging them not only to persist but to go even further OR 2. urge those
who seem hesitant about which way to go and conscious that the majority of
the population does not support this war to take a stand against the war OR
3. express opposition to those who seem only too eager to follow the US in
this new mass killing

Original call from CANESI/QNESI (www.canesi.org)
Dear friends,
At the present time, the majority of the population of Canada probably does
not support a war against Iraq. A few weeks ago, free discussions on the war
at the House of Commons --not decision-making of course!-- revealed the
opposition, or concerns, of a large number of MPs, even within the Liberal
party. Many could end up voting against Canadian participation in this war.
But nothing imposes on the government to hold a vote in Parliament on
this --not to speak of a free vote!-- before committing Canadian troops in
this new war. On the democratic level, this would only be minimal...
NEXT WEEK, from 11 to 15 November, there will be a parliamentary recess in
Ottawa. This is often an occasion for MPs to return and spend time in their
electoral ridings. And it would be a real good opportunity for all of us to
let them know directly what we think of this whole affair!
The Canadian and Quebec Networks to End Sanctions on Iraq (CANESI and QNESI)
are thus launching a common call to make of TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12th
a cross-Canada "CALL YOUR LOCAL MP" Day of Action
. to express support for the position of those who expressed clear views
opposting the war, encourage them not only to persist but to go even
further;
. to increase pressure on others who seem hesitant about which way to go and
conscious that the majority of the population does not support this war;
. to denounce others who seem only too eager to follow the US in this new
mass killing.
The following day, November 13th, all political parties are apparently
holding caucuses. Following the likely adoption of the new US resolution at
the Security Council today, 'war' will probably be on the agenda of these
caucus meetings. Let's make sure that our "citizens' pressure" leaves them
no doubt about which way the Canadian people want them to go!
In solidarity!
Raymond Legault
on behalf of the Steering Committee
of the Canadian Network to End Sanctions on Iraq (CANESI)
