[OPIRG-EVENTS] Guatemalan Indigenous Leader to Speak in Ottawa - Monday, March3rd

Politics of Courage:
A survivor's tale of the Rio Negro massacre and the World Bank actions

Meet Jesus Tecu Osorio, a Maya-Achi man from Guatemala:

Monday, March 3rd at 7 PM
Fourth Avenue Baptist Church
109-A Fourth Ave. (at Bank St.)

Jesus will speak about his experience as an eyewitness of the 1982
massacre in which 177 women and children from his village of Rio
Negro were killed by the Guatemalan Army and paramilitaries. This
massacre was committed in part because Rio Negro villagers opposed
forced resettlement to make way for the Chixoy Dam Hydro-Electric
Project, funded by the World Bank and the Inter-American Development
Bank. Jesus lost his parents and all but one sibling to the massacres.

Jesus is the co-founder of ADIVIMA, a local human rights group at the
forefront of the exhumation of mass graves in the region, and
co-founder of the Rabinal Legal Clinic. He is also a participant in
the genocide case against the military generals of the early 1980s
and has been a leader in the struggle for compensation and
reparations from the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank
for the damages and deaths due to the Chixoy Dam Project.
