(1) Now there's only one place to go for environmental
      accident info

January 30, 2001 - China Online reports that due to the
highly sensitive nature of reporting environmentally
damaging accidents, the General Administration of the
Environment (GAE) has issued a notice declaring that it
alone will make public such accidents and related

(2) 294,000 displaced by Three Gorges dam in 2000

January 24, 2001 - Li Yongan, the general vice-manager of
China's Three Gorges Corporation recently announced that
294,000 people were moved out of the Three Gorges dam's
reservoir area last year, the Beijing-based China News
Service reports. Another 256,000 people are slated for
resettlement by 2003, Li said. The corporation's total
investment in the Three Gorges dam project last year was
US$7.3-billion, which includes US$3.6-billion for dam
construction, powerhouses, and ship locks, and US$2.5-
billion for resettlement.

(3) Three Gorges area hit by landslide

January 19, 2001 - Guangzhou Daily reports a large
landslide lasting five hours occurred on January 17 in the
county town of Yunyang, which lies in the heart of the
Three Gorges reservoir area. According to Guangzhou
Daily, there were no injuries due to timely rescue efforts.
The early morning landslide resulted in a massive slip
measuring 300 metres long, 500 m high and 5 to 18 m wide.
The landslide destroyed 2000 trees in the Yangtze River
forest-belt area and part of the local power supply facilities,
resulting in US$120,000 in damages. Geological experts at
China's Changjiang Water Resources Commission have
confirmed that an overhanging land mass, measuring 20,000
cubic metres, was still active in the area.
